iWeaver: Towards an Interactive Web-Based Adaptive Learning Environment to Address Individual Learning Styles

This paper describes the theoretical and technical aspects that were taken into consideration in the design process of iWeaver, an interactive web-based adaptive learning environment. Building on the Dunn & Dunn learning styles model, iWeaver aims to create an individualised learning environment that accommodates specific learning styles. To achieve this, iWeaver uses database-driven JavaServer Pages, interactive Flash animations, streaming audio and other specifically developed learning tools. This paper describes which media representation is allocated to each learning style and the underlying rationale for this allocation. A central concept of iWeaver is that this media-style allocation is flexible. It can change dynamically according to learner behaviour. This learner-centred approach strives to increase motivation, retention of knowledge and understanding for learners using iWeaver. The prototype teaches the Java Programming Language.
